Raleigh/Durham is on my radar but real estate is moving fast and expensive down there and they dont have the beautiful pre-1940 stock of houses I love to be surrounded by. Weve now been married 20 years with 2 children. Youll regret it. Tampa, St. Pete and Clearwater are better choices for black families. We have been living in Alabama all of my life (40 plus years) and looking to branch out. Its a beautiful place but with a notoriously ugly slave history and good ole boy system still in place, racial tensions will always be high here. I live in Lemon Grove a black neighborhood with a lot history and green hills about 10 minutes from downtown. It is a melting pot but still not enough diversity or culture. I live in the suburbs of DC and have to stay that moving to PG County, Maryland would be ideal if you are looking to see affluent black families. Its an employment mecca, which has some of every stable and trending industry. We are a small family of three looking for the safest place to raise my African American boy as well. African American and Caribbean Families, How About Seattle, Washington? For example we have a membership at Cosi and it is one of our favorite places to take our toddlers. Hawaii is the most racially diverse state in the U.S. and has consistently been ranked as one of the best places to raise Black children. Its time for a change and Im just hoping for a good home for my family to grow. You dont see too many of us out and about. The black community is very small. There is no cohesiveness. Find your comfort zone and wait out the madness!! Blacks are twice as likely to use payday loans, which may be appealing as a temporary fix for cash-flow problems but make it challenging to grow financially. DC is expensive, so you will more than likely find yourself living in Maryland (Waldorf, Upper Marlboro, Bowie) to find somewhat decent schools and housing or you will end up in Virginia (Woodbridge, Fairfax, Manassas), both locations in MD and VA will often times leave you with a bad commute as traffic here is awful because everyone works mostly for the government (i.e., govt employee or contractor). If you and your family grew up in Seattle, you better believe everyone knows who you are, however, gentrification moved a lot of black folks further South or away. The cities of Suffolk, Chesapeake, and Virginia Beach, VA. are hiring and seeking more AAs in a highly AA populated metro. I find the Pacific North West has this problem. California is the worst and right now we are literally on fire. There is so much to do here. So go figure. Living in Mesa its a black person is fine. Move to LA or Maryland.
